JAPANESE ADDRESS FORMS
Japanese Postal Code and Address Form Guide
Use the form’s labels and example as the final instruction. Postal code, prefecture, municipality, street number, and building details are commonly separate fields.
Start with the postal code
Japanese postal codes use seven digits, often displayed as 123-4567. Some forms request half-width numbers and may accept or reject the hyphen. Enter only the characters its example shows, then use any address lookup only as a starting point.
Follow the displayed field order
Where labels are separate, select 都道府県 (prefecture), then 市区町村 (city/ward/town/village), then 丁目・番地・号 (block, number, and unit). Put building and room information in the dedicated 建物名・部屋番号 field where one is supplied. Do not translate, reorder, or insert punctuation unless the form asks.
Check character width and required name forms
Address fields can accept Japanese characters while a phone number or postal code requires 半角数字. A Japanese space and a normal space are different characters. Keep the kana field separate from the address and read any error message literally.
